De empiriska studierna När vårdhemmet Carlslund i Upplands Väsby skulle avvecklas 1978 inbjöds jag att ingå i den grupp som skulle utarbeta en avvecklingsplan. Jag hade då erfarenheter från såväl institutionellt som samhälleligt baserade omsorger med mig till detta uppdrag. Under 1970-talet arbetade jag nämligen med två projekt utifrån forskningsgruppen Mental Retardation vid Uppsala Universitet. Det ena gällde frågan om specialsjukhus för utvecklingsstörda, medan det andra gällde utvärdering av dagcenterverksamhet. Under ett tidigt skede av arbetet på avvecklingssplanen för vårdhemmet Carlslund ombads jag att initiera ett forskningsprojekt för att jämföra personers vardag på institution med tillvaron för dem som erhöll stöd från icke institutionella omsorger. Ytterligare studier kom att genomföras under 1980-talet utifrån frågor som uppstod när vårdhemmet Carlslund avvecklades. När vårdhemmen i Skaraborgs län skulle avvecklas inbjöds jag att dokumentera och analysera denna förändring. Detta resulterade i ännu en serie projekt. Detta innebar att jag kom att arbeta intensivt med projekt som berörde frågan om avveckling av vårdhem för utvecklingsstörda under åren 1978-1995. Min forskningsmässiga hemvist för den avslutande analysen har varit Pedagogiska Institutionen vid Uppsala Universitet. Perioden under vilken den institutionella eran upplöstes var begränsad. Skulle man fånga något av den behövde många engageras. Jag inbjöd därför kunniga och engagerade medarbetare att ingå i mina projekt. Detta arbete resulterade i en serie empiriska studier av skiftet från institutionsliv till samhällsdeltagande för personer med begåvningshandikapp. Här följer de empiriska studier som ingår i avhandlingen "From institutional life to community participation". |

The empirical studies When it was decided in 1978 that Carlslund residential home in Upplands Väsby was to be closed down I was invited to participate in the group who was to develope the plan for its closure. At the time when I got engaged in this task I already had previous experiences of both institutionally and community based services. During the seventies, while with the research group Mental Retaration at Uppsala University, I had worked on two projects, one concerning special hospitals for persons intellectual disability, the other on evaluation of day activity centres. In an early phase of the work with the plan of closure for Carlslund residential home I was asked to initate a research project which would compare the everyday life of persons at the institution with that of those receiving non-institutional services. Some further studies were carried out during the eighties concerning other issues which arose during the closure of the residential home. Later, when the residential homes in Skaraborg county were to be closed I was invited to document and analyse the ongoing change. This resulted in a further series of projects. As a consequence I was intensively involved with the issue of the closure of institutions throughout the period 1978-1995. My academic home during the final analysis of my research has been the Department of Education at Uppsala University. The period during which the institutional era was dissolved was limited. If these events were to be captured it was necessary that many were involved. I therefore invited knowledgable and committed colleagues to participate in my projects. This work has resulted in a series of empirical studies concerning the transition from instituionally to community based services for persons with intellectual disability. The empirical studies which are included in the thesis "From institutional life to community participation" are listed below. |
